Musical Improv Comedy

Popularized by television shows such as “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, Music Comedy Improv is one of the fastest growing trends in the comedy world. As a music director and faculty member at the Second City Training Center in Chicago, I have taught both Music Improv and Comedic Songwriting to Conservatory students at Second City and Columbia College, and directed musical ensembles on stage. Successful music improv ensembles possess not only strong comedic and musical abilities, but also high levels of group chemistry, trust, and advanced chorus-building techniques developed through time and experience. Concentrated practice in the popular structures and forms of music improv result in a stronger, more cohesive ensemble performance, while advanced long-form exercises encourage new opportunities for innovation in this exciting medium. Ensemble coaching and group classes only.

“Laura is both patient and exacting as a vocal coach. Working with her was a pleasure, and the greatest benefit was that, while enjoying the work, I was growing as a performer. While her one-on-one coaching built up my confidence and helped me with my vocal range, Laura is equally adept at working with singers of varying levels of experience, one of many challenges of the music improv genre. She has a great ability to communicate and teach the specifics that can make songs funny”.
